I would like to pursue DNA testing through my mother's Morrison family. Her father's family emigrated to Canada, presumably from Barra, in the early 1800s. I have not been able to track relatives (i.e. male cousins) who could support my inquiries. Which DNA test might yield the most accurate information, given that I an going through my maternal line?
You might find clues to Morrison relatives through autosomal DNA testing. These tests are best for 3rd cousin and closer, so you would want to test the earliest generation family member available who shares the same Morrison descent with you. If you find a Morrison connection through autosomal testing (e.g., FTDNA Family Finder or the AncestryDNA test), you would want to verify the connection to your line through further documentary research. That being done, you would look for a male Morrison among the newly-found cousins to do a Y-DNA test.
