Groups in our project are assigned based on STR matches. In the case of groups whose STR markers have more common values, it is possible or likely that not all members of a group will be closely related to each other. This is particularly true with groups such as Group K, where values are close to those of the Western Modal Haplotype.
In groups such as this, subgroups have been formed to cluster those participants who are most closely connected to each other. Often the appropriate cluster can be determined by testing a greater number of STR markers to look for definitive marker mutations. However, some participants have only tested a minimum number of STR markers and the appropriate subgroup may not be clear.
A much more certain method of determining the appropriate subgroup in cases such as these is now available through detailed-level SNP testing. If you have been assigned to a group with several subgroups and would like more information on this, please let me know.
