Yes, the Morrison, Gilmore project at FTDNA would welcome you as well and you would be a member of Group Q there.

Re: Ancestry

EllayJay, there are Morrisons in GEDMatch, but no Morrison project. Whether autosomal DNA testing will help you with your Morrisons depends on how many generations back your Morrisons are. Autosomal DNA will reliably show cousins back to about the 3rd cousin level. Before that you may or may not get...

Re: Group A Origins

Dermory, my own Morrisons are Group F and a number of them still live to the east of Coleraine. My first Morrison in America was married in Coleraine to a Holmes who was related to the Abraham Holmes with the letter from Aghadowey. There were Morrisons at Limavady and they may have been of your Grou...

Re: Participating in the Morrison DNA Project

The best way to participate in the Morrison DNA Project at present is through Family Tree DNA. Results from other companies are at a great disadvantage in that they can be compared to results at FTDNA, but will not appear on the Morrison project website and will not be visible to other participants....

Re: Participating in the Morrison DNA Project

Recent changes in privacy policies at Family Tree DNA necessitated that Morrison DNA Project reports use the FTDNA website. Reports are currently available to project members at that site: https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/morrison/about

Re: DNA testing through mother's line

You might find clues to Morrison relatives through autosomal DNA testing. These tests are best for 3rd cousin and closer, so you would want to test the earliest generation family member available who shares the same Morrison descent with you. If you find a Morrison connection through autosomal testi...

Re: Joseph H Morrison Sr

SNP testing among matches can narrow down how far back a Y-DNA connection is better than comparing the number of STR mismatches.

Re: Lewis Morrisons

Y-DNA testing is a good way to learn more about whether your Morrison line connects with known Morrison lines from Lewis. Many do not, but descend from families in central Scotland or Aberdeenshire.

Re: private messaging

If the person is a member of the Morrison DNA Project who has not posted on this board and who does not have an e-mail address listed in the FTDNA matches, you would need to go through the Morrison DNA Project administrator.

Re: Looking for FTDNA kit no.369790

FTDNA normally provides links to contact matches by e-mail. If there is no e-mail address listed, contact the project administrator and request information on how to contact the matching person.

Re: King Olaf the Black

Y-DNA testing is the way to determine paternal lineage. Most people start with a 37-marker STR test and follow up with SNP testing, which is more definitive.

Re: Genealogy. David Gilmour from Strathaven Scotland

Try http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk to search for records of Gilmours in the Strathaven area. Y-DNA testing can show which other Scottish surnames are most closely related. There is probably no connection to the Isle of Lewis.

Re: O'MUIRGHEASAIN

Spelling in Scotland was highly variable until recent centuries. Some of the different spellings are due to regional preferences and/or emigration before spellings were standardized in Scotland.

These matches are often helpful in determining deeper Morrison ancestry, whether through connections with other Morrisons who lived in the same vicinity as their earliest known ancestor or through connection...

An autosomal DNA for the family member would be a good tool to provide some clues.
